Faculty Development Leaves

MAY 2006 BOARD OF REGENTS MEETING

  1. Paul W. Child, PHD, Associate Professor of English, requests leave for the purpose of conducting research and preparing the results of completed research for publication. This leave will allow him to complete or substantially complete a book-length study of eighteenth-century medical literature comprising an estimated seven chapters of which five have already been drafted. It will also allow him to complete some research for the unwritten chapters by allowing him to visit the libraries holding these materials. Dr. Child will be on leave full time during fall semester 2006.

  2. Furjen Deng, PHD, Professor of Sociology, requests leave for the purpose of improving academic effectiveness, conducting research, and preparing results of completed research for publication. This leave will allow her to conduct and publish research on the quality of life among Chinese and Vietnamese breast cancer survivors in Texas and Northern California. Dr. Deng will be on leave full time during fall semester 2006.

  3. Robert E. Donahoo, PHD, Professor of English, requests leave for the purpose of preparing results of completed research for publication. This leave will allow him to continue research and publication on the fiction of Southern novelist and short story writer Flannery O'Conner. Dr. Donahoo will be on leave full time during spring semester 2007.

  4. Jerry L. Dowling, JD, Professor of Criminal Justice, requests leave for the purpose of conducting research and completing research for publication. This leave will allow him to conduct research and create a textbook on criminal law that combines generic principles with a discussion of statutory differences in each of the major states--New York, California, Texas, Florida, and Illinois. Dr. Dowling will be on leave full time during fall semester 2006.

  5. Robert A. Lane, PHD, Professor of Agriculture, requests leave for the purpose of conducting research, preparing results of completed research for publication, and developing curriculum. This leave will allow him to conduct research on the barberpole worm in goats. This internal parasitic nematode causes considerable economic and death losses in the meat goat industry, especially in the more humid regions and the tropics. It will also allow him to complete two manuscripts for publication from data previously collected during two of the master's theses that he has supervised. In addition, it will allow him to develop the itinerary and work on the course structure for international classes offered during the summer. Dr. Lane will be on leave full time during fall semester 2006.

  6. Frederick C. Lunenburg, PHD, Professor of Education, requests leave for the purpose of conducting research and preparing the results of completed research for publication. This leave will allow him to revise the fourth edition of a book on educational administration. It will also allow him to write a book on planning, writing, and defending a successful thesis or dissertation. In addition, it will allow him to prepare several articles for publication in professional journals. Dr. Lunenberg will be on leave full time fall semester 2006.

  7. Diane L. Neudorf, PHD, Associate Professor of Biology, requests leave for the purpose of conducting research and preparing results of completed research for publication. This request will allow her to initiate a new project in the roles of the sexes in the nest defense in birds. Also, it will allow her to complete and submit three manuscripts and to attend the Fourth North American Ornithological Conference meeting. Dr. Neudorf will be on leave full time fall semester 2006

  8. Sam S. Souryal, PHD, Professor of Criminal Justice, requests leave for the purpose of conducting research. This request will allow him to return to Siwa and search for physical evidence that might support his thesis that Plato developed his republican justice theory in Siwa rather than in Athens. Dr. Souryal will be on leave full time fall semester 2006.

  9. Victor E. Sower, PHD, Professor of Management, requests leave for the purpose of improving academic effectiveness, conducting research, and preparing results of completed research for publcation. This request will allow him to update his knowledge in the area of healthcare quality management, to conduct research in that area, to prepare at least one manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal for publication, to prepare a chapter related to this topic for publication in a book, and to integrate what he learned into his Quality Management course for spring 2007. Dr. Sower will be on leave full time fall semester 2006.

  10. Jack C. Turner, PHD, Professor of Biology, requests leave for the purpose of conducting research and preparing results of completed research for publication. This request will allow him to conduct research in Southern California on the effects of golf course construction and operation on the quality of water runoff compared to the quality of the natural horizontal and vertical hydrology. This data will be used to assess the potential for impact of golf course runoff on Federal Endangered Act (ESA) listed vernal pool and alkali playa species. Results will be written for publication in an appropriate peer-reviewed scientific journal. Dr. Turner will be on leave half time for the 2006-2007 academic year.
