1. PURPOSE
1.01 The purpose of this academic policy statement is to provide guidelines that will enable SHSU students enrolled in developmental/remedial courses to request permission from the appropriate academic dean to no longer attend these courses once the TASP test has been passed.
2. GENERAL
2.01 The Texas Education Code stipulates that: a student whose performance is below standard for a tested skill area must participate continuously in a remediation program until that section of the test is passed (TEC 51.306[e]).
2.02 Subchapter P of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Rules and Regulations stipulates that: each institution shall formulate policies to require and monitor students' participation in appropriate remedial courses and/or other types of programs until such students have passed all sections of the TASP test (Subchapter P, 5.317 [i]).
3. PROCEDURE
3.01 Students at SHSU, who are currently enrolled in developmental classes because they have failed one or more parts of the TASP test, may petition the appropriate academic dean for permission to be excused from attending the developmental class(es) if they can provide evidence that the required section(s) of the TASP test have been passed.
3.02 If the academic dean approves the student's request, the student's developmental course instructor(s) will be so notified in writing by the dean.
a. If the student's attendance and performance record in the developmental course(s) up to the date of the dean's approval have been satisfactory, the course instructor(s) should award the mark of "S" at the end of the semester or summer session.
b. If the student's attendance and/or performance record in the developmental course(s) up to the date of the dean's approval have been unsatisfactory, the course instructor(s) should award the grade of "F" at the end of the semester or summer session.
c. If the student's attendance record in the developmental course(s) up to the date of the dean's approval has been satisfactory, but the student's performance record indicates need for further improvement, the course instructor(s) should award the mark of "N" at the end of the semester or summer session.
