The purpose of this report is to document all fires that occurred on the properties owned, occupied or leased by Sam Houston State University This report is in compliance with the Higher Education Opportunity Act (Public Law 110-315).

12/15/08, 2:45 pm – electrical fire in HVAC unit in room 408 University Hotel.

5/1/09, 1:37 pm – fire in trash dumpster in Bearkat Village Apartments parking lot.

5/12/09, 8:01 pm – fire in trash dumpster in Jackson Shaver Dormitory parking lot.

7/16/09, 4:10 pm – fire in trash can in room 203 in Smith Hutson Business Building.

11/04/09, 10:59 PM - Fire in trash can located on the northeast exterior landing of the second floor in the Music Building.

12/16/2010, 11:03 PM - Fire reported at Bearkat Village #158 in the kitchen (stove area).

01/21/2011, 09:15 AM - Smoke/Fire reported in the Administration Building 3rd Floor Mehcanical Room.

Value of Damaged Property:  $500.00 estimate (replace Air Pusher that shorted out)
Cause of Fire: Air Pusher device shorted out and caught fire causing smoke.

04/26/2011, 1:35 AM - Power pole struck by lightening and caught fire located at the intersection of Bowers Boulevard and Avenue J.

Number of Injuries: None
Value of Damaged Property: Replacement of electrical wire contacts.
Cause of Fire: Lightening.
Value of Damaged Property: Approxiamtely $8,000.00 to replace electrical conncections damaged by lightening and subsequent fire.

06/17/201, 10:41 AM - Officer dispatched to Gibbs Ranch, located at 104 Fraser, in reference to a barrell that exploded, caught fire, while being welded on.

Cause of Fire: Welding Accident, Human Error
Value of Damaged Property: None - old barrel that was destroyed.

07/14/2011, 9:54 PM - Officer dispatched to Bearkat Village, 2401 Montgomery Road, in reference to a reported fire in an apartment.  Fire was suppressed prior to arrival by overhead sprinkler system.

Value of Damaged Property: Unknown at this time. Significant damage.
Cause of Fire: Cooking

09/29/2011, 3:10 PM - Officer was dispatched to the Smith-Hutson Building (located at 1821 Avenue I) in reference to smoke in the building.  Smoke was determined to be by fire and or smoldering roofing material.

Cause of Fire: Construction Accident

01/07/2012, 9:24 PM - Officer was dispatched to the Ron Mafrige Field House (located at 620 Bowers Boulevard) in reference to a fire alarm. Upon arrival, a burning odor was detected.  The Huntsville Fire Department was summoned to the scene.  The source of the burning odor was determined to be an electrical box that shorted out and caused smoke and or a small fire.  Minimal damage was observed.

04/25/2012, 5:30 PM - Officer was dispatched to Gibbs Ranch (104 Fraser Road) in reference to a fire.  Upon arrival, fire department was already on scene.  Complaiant reported that a contractor owned hay baler caught fire.  There was no damage to Unviersity property.

Cause of Fire: Possible Faulty Bearings

09/07/2012, 6:55 PM - Officer was dispatched to Gibbs Ranch (104 Fraser Road) in reference to a report of a fire.  Upon arrival, officer met with the fire department (on scene) who reported that they responded to a grass fire located in a hay field that had just been cut.  The fire burned approximately three acres of shredded grass (1212417).

11/26/2012, 2:32 PM - Officer was dispatced to the Lee Drain Building (1901 Avenue I) in reference to a fire alarm.  Upon arrival, officer located a mechanical room on the first floor that had smoke coming from it.  The Huntsville Fire Department was notified and arrived a short time later.  It was determined that an elevator motor had burned up causing heat and smoke in the mechanical room.  At 4 PM, the building was cleared and reopened for normal operations.

01/29/2013, 10:04 AM - Officers were dispatched to the Smith-Hutson Building (1821 Avenue I) at 10:04 AM in reference to a report of a fire.  Upon arrival, an officer noted smoke on the floor of the the building and met with a university electrician who reported that an elevator motor had burned up. The buidling was evacuated and members of the Huntsville Fire Department arrived and confirmed the situation.  The building was reopened at 12:15 PM for normal operations.

05/08/2013, 9:43 AM - An officer responded to 1600 Avenue I (Rachael Jackson Hall) at 9:43 AM in reference to smoke coming from a dryer vent.  Upon inspection, it was determined that a female university student was drying a pair of boots in the dryer.  The boots rubber soles melted causing the dryer to overheat.  Inspection by maintenance personnel indicated that there was no damage to the dryer and further stated that the debris from the boots caused the smoke in the dryer (137048).

Cause of Fire: No actual fire, drying boots in dryer at high temperature.
