FTP Access from Off Campus

This evening at 6PM, we will be disabling FTP access to UNX1 (www.shsu.edu) from off-campus. This change is being implemented due to security concerns. As an alternate solution, you can still connect with SecureFTP using FileZilla or preferred SFTP client. This will NOT affect on-campus FTP access.

FileZilla FTP Software

As previously stated in the August IR update, we have done away with the old FTP software, WS_FTP, and replaced it with the new FileZilla 3.2.3.1. FileZilla has been deployed to all computers on our domain except for the computer labs. Those users wishing to install the software can do so by following the instructions below.

Install Instructions:
*Click on Start, then Control Panel.
*Click on Add/Remove Programs, and then Add New Programs.
*Under the Add programs from your network list, click on FileZilla and then the Add button.
*The program will then be listed under Start > All Programs > SHSU Programs > Utility(s).

FileZilla is very similar to the older WS_FTP program, so usage of the new program should not be too different. If you have any trouble using the new FileZilla software please follow the guides we have created on our Technology Tutorials page:

Setting Up SFTP Connection With Filezilla
Moving Files Around With Filezilla

If you have any trouble with installation or use of the program please call the Helpdesk at 936-294-1950.

SHSU's Dial-In Support

Just a reminder that SHSU's dial-in support has come to an end effective today, Sept 1st. Below is an excerpt from August IR Update:

Reach Out and Touch Faster

The campus modem bank life is coming to an end. If you have been using SHSU's dial-in as your access method to reach the Internet from off-campus, you have probably become increasingly frustrated with the slow response times. With ever more sophisticated, robust, interactive web pages in today's environment, a dial-in solution is simply not up to the expected standard.

Therefore, as of September 1st, you may contact the Helpdesk to find out if the modem bank is up. This will be the only support provided. Additionally, if the modem bank experiences an equipment failure, repairs will not be funded and the modem bank will be removed at that time. Some suggested alternatives are provided, and we encourage you to make arrangements now.
