Password Expiration Time Decreasing

If you read our IR Update that is sent out to all Faculty and Staff at the beginning of each month, you will have noticed in the August 2009 edition that we will be changing the length of time for password expiration from 1 year to 180 days (6 months). Here is an excerpt from the IR Update:
PINs and Passwords

Passwords: The campus expiration for passwords has been 365 days for Windows and Macintoshes. On Nell, the expiration has been only 90 days. Auditors have alerted us that since so many administrative duties are now accessible within SamMenu and SamWeb, the Windows password expiration has to be shortened.

We know that every three months just feels too frequent, so we negotiated a compromise of 180 days.
  • You can reset your password when logged in on a campus PC. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and then Change Password.
  • You can reset your password from SamWeb. Select Computer Services, then Account Password Change.
  • You can reset your password in Outlook Web Access. Click Options, then Change Password.

Starting on September 1st, we are going to begin slowly working our way through accounts to implement the new password expiration policy. This will be a phased approach, so we will decrease the time by one week every week. 9/1 the expiration time will be set to 358 days. 9/8 the expiration time will be set to 351 days. 9/15 the expiration time will be set to 344 days, and so on until we reach 180 days.

Email reminders will continue to be sent during this time so that you should not be caught without notice that you need to reset your password.

Residence Hall Network

Residence halls open for occupancy starting Thursday, August 20th. One of the first things you will need to do after moving in is register your computer onto the SHSU network. Each dorm has at least one port per student. All residents in Bearkat Village, Sam Houston Village, and Raven Village, will plug into the back of the phone that is provided. Follow this guide to make sure you are plugged into the correct port in the phone: BKV, Raven Village SHV Ethernet Setup. These three dorms also have a port located in the living room. All other dorm residents will use the red Ethernet ports located in the walls of their dorm. You will need to make sure your computer already has a built in Ethernet card, or you will need to purchase one. Also, you will need to provide an Ethernet cable.

Once you have set up your computer and plugged it into the proper port, open a web browser and follow the instructions below.

  1. Read and agree to the SHSU Computer Resource Acceptable Use Policy.
  2. Type in your SHSU username and password
  3. Click SUBMIT. Once your computer has been successfully registered you will be redirected to a Microsoft webpage.
  4. If you are not directed to the SHSU Netreg page when you first launch your browser, follow the link listed below. This link will take you to various tutorials that will help you get connected to the network. You can also stop by the Helpdesk or any of the computer labs to pick up printed copies of these tutorials.

Comments

We have disabled comments within this announcement framework. We want to keep this as just a spot to provide information throughout the month. However, we'd like to keep the "real" back/forth work order communications solely within the SamWeb Work Order system. That procedure will ensure that records are kept within the Call Logs and WO's which present a complete picture of what's happening.

Gearing up for Fall 2009

We are only 3 weeks away from the new Fall semester. Now’s the perfect time to make sure you have everything up to date and ready for the new year. Below are a few reminders and tips that will make the transition into the new academic year go as smoothly as possible.

S Drive Quota
First, we would like to remind everyone of the S drive quotas. The quota set for Faculty/Staff is 1 GB while the students’ is 200 MB. If you have any old material that you need to save, archiving it to a flash drive or CD is recommended. This way you can stay below your set quota and still have access to all necessary files. Note to Faculty/Staff: Any work related material that is shared with your department should be stored on the T drive. Also, any class related material should be posted on Blackboard and not on the T drive.

Exchange Mail
Your Exchange email account also has a quota. Faculty/Staff have a quota of 150 MB, and Students have a quota of 80 MB. If you are having space issues in your email, it would be best to setup Personal folders using Microsoft Outlook 2007. Outlook is available on all campus computers as well as Remote Desktop Connection.

Blackboard
Fall 2009 classes will begin showing up on Blackboard starting August 10th. The Blackboard system updates three times daily. Due to heavy traffic at the beginning of the year, it could take up to 24 hours for your class schedule changes to show up on Blackboard. If you have changed your class schedule and the classes are not available in Blackboard by the following day, please contact the Helpdesk.

Password Expiration
The password to your account expires on a yearly basis. It is important that you keep an up to date password so that you always have access to your Exchange email, Blackboard, and computer account. You will be notified via email up to 60 days before your password expires. If you are unsure of what your password is, go ahead and reset it now. To reset your password, log into SamWeb using the alternate log in. Proceed to Computer Services -> Account Password Change. If you are a new student you will need to click on Account Creation instead if you haven’t set up your account already. If you are unable to log into SamWeb through the alternate login, please contact the Helpdesk and request a PIN reset.

Lab Hours
Follow the link below to look at the Lab hours and locations. Take note of the labs that are closest to your classes. You never know when you might need to take a quick trip to print something off before class.

Hopefully this will get you started on the right foot for the new year. If you have any questions or issues please contact the Helpdesk at either 936-294-1950 or email us at helpdesk@shsu.edu. Our regular hours for walk-ins are Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm, and phone/email support is 24 hrs a day. Good luck with the Fall 2009 semester!

Temporary Helpdesk Station - UPDATE

We have moved all of our assistants back up to our normal location, AB1, room 208. We now have some lighting and the floor has been cleared to allow traffic back through the area. Please still be careful as there is furniture in the hallway while they complete the renovations.
