Student Computer Lab Assistant Job Description

The Computer Labs staff is made up of students. Their role is to assist users with general questions about hardware or software, not to tutor. Computer Services is always looking for motivated students to work as Lab Assistants. Many students have gone on to great professional positions based on the experience they gained while working for Computer Services.

When applying, you need to download and fill out a Texas employment application and drop it off at the Computer Services Office in AB1 room 200.

Education & Experience Requirements:

New employees: Must be an SHSU student with a SHSU Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher. Must maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA and show satisfactory academic progress. First-year students will be considered if other experience and education is exceptional

Must have experience or education in Windows XP, Microsoft Office Suites, desktop configurations, Internet browsers, or computing languages. Preferred candidates will be familiar with SamInfo, Blackboard, SamMail, scanners, CD burners, and zip disks. Basic computer troubleshooting skills a plus.

Nature & Purpose of Position :

To serve as a Computer Services Lab Assistant which includes answering student questions related to the use of the computers on the Sam LAN, troubleshooting PCs, Macintoshes, and peripheral equipment.

Students must have passed 24 hours of course work in the most recent academic year, must be a registered SHSU student, and enrolled for at least 6 semester hours during the regular semester. Student will need a valid State ID card or Driver's License and a Social Security card. Students must be prompt, have a pleasant, courteous disposition, and able to carry out instruction with limited supervision. Strong administrative skills, initiative, and attention to detail are keys to success. As some computer labs are open 24 hours, some night and weekend work may be required. Due to the requirement of moving boxes of paper to labs, student must also be able to lift and transport a 50 lb box of paper.
