General Considerations

  • Content & Organization
  • Stylistic Consistency
  • Legibility
  • Colors and Backgrounds
  • Graphic Use & Placement
  • Use of Animation
3
Content and Organization
  • Use Graphics to reinforce content

  • Organize presentation so that it flows naturally from start to finish

  • Include breathing spaces for participants to ask questions

4
Consistency
  • Stick with your background and font color schemes unless by changing them you mean to accentuate a point

  • Place title and text consistently to maximize impact of directed changes

  • Avoid repetitious use of sound effects and animation

5
Legibility & Fonts
  • Use true-type fonts for easier reading
    • Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica
  • Bold everything

  • Title text should be 44 point or larger

  • Primary text should be 32-36 point
    • Secondary text should never be smaller than 24 points

6
Colors & Backgrounds
  • Use high contrasting colors
    • Dark backgrounds with light text or vis-versa

  • Avoid Red

  • Work within color families

  • Avoid busy backgrounds
7
Poor Background Selection
  • Complex patterns draw attention away from your text

  • Poor color choices make presentation hard to read
8
Graphics
  • Use subject-appropriate graphics
  • Use graphics to break-up monotony of slide presentation by interjecting humor and/or additional information
  • Mix your graphical mediums
    • Images, photos, videos, charts, graphs, etc.
  • Do not crowd text or otherwise clutter up the slide with excessive graphics
9
Balance
  • Follow the “Rule of 6”
    • 6 lines of text per slide and 6 words per line

  • Respect white space

  • Pay attention to graphic size/placement
10
Animation
  • Use a variety of animation effects
  • Sound effects/bites work best when used for added emphasis rather than routine introductions
  • Be sure that if you are using sound effects that you have sufficient speakers so the audience can hear them because nothing is less impressive than an unnoticed attention grabber
11
Questions?
12
"Too much text crowded onto..."
  • Too much text crowded onto one slide makes it difficult for audience members to follow along with your presentation by confusing them with undifferentiated points that seemingly go on and on forever, particularly if they have difficulty reading the screen because the font is too small.  Exotic animations and sounds only add to the confusion.
