Program Description

Program group on the beachEnhancing Career Opportunities - Integrative Mathematical Program for Analyzing Coastal Systems (ECO-IMPACS) is a multidisciplinary program in environmental math modeling which focuses on shifting the culture of how we recruit and train students from mathematical and biological sciences to meet the needs of government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private corporations for quantitative evaluation of ecosystems. This collaborative and educational program is based at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) and includes hand-on field work in coastal wetlands at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), analytical sample analyses at the Texas Research Institute for Environmental Studies (TRIES), and regular interaction with a network of community partners who have a vested interest in coastal conservation and management. ECO-IMPACS will provide workforce experiences for both graduate and undergraduate students that bridge the gap between traditional classroom experiences and their future experience in the green economy by developing their ability to successfully integrate mathematics and biology to complete entry level assignments in the field of environmental mathematics.
