Forensic Anthropology Laboratory
STAFS is a state-of-the-art research facility that provides the best equipment available for quality research and optimal learning experiences for students, researchers, and professionals in physical and forensic anthropology. Its modern skeletal collection provides a unique cross section of the changing face of the human race as well as glimpses into ongoing issues in the medicolegal field.
Among the equipment available is:
- A necropsy suite to conduct autopsies
- A walk-in freezer and cooler unit for the preservation of human remains
- A maceration station for cleaning skeletal remains
- The donated skeletal Collection Room
- A digital X-ray machine to capture anomalies in the body
- A microtome bone and teeth cutter, grinder, and polisher to extract samples for study
- A digitizer to accurately measure features of the skeleton
- Compound, stereomicroscopes and specfinder microscopes to analyze in greater detail
- Osteology measurement instruments to provide data to determine the age, sex and ancestral origin of the victim
- Multiple computer stations with software programs to record and research findings in the field
