Program Description
The Master of Science in Statistics at Sam Houston State University is designed to provide individuals with the academic foundation needed to pursue doctoral studies;
to prepare competent statisticians who are equipped to accept responsibilities in business, industry, and public service positions; and to present a supplemental graduate
program for students specializing in areas where statistics are readily used, such as social sciences, criminal justice, and the physical sciences.
The SHSU Statistics program is widely respected across the state and beyond. Our graduates are sought after by top-notch Statistics Ph.D. programs nationwide. Others are
employed as data analysts for major medical centers and pharmaceutical companies, as research scientists for marketing and banking firms, and as college instructors and
professors.
Our faculty research interests include sports statistics, discriminant analysis, multivariate statistics, biomedical statistics, quality control, survey sampling,
generalized linear mixed model and Bayesian
statistics, offering a wide array of areas to interest anyone seeking a career in statistics. With a low student to faculty ratio, students can be sure to have a personal educational
experience.
Curriculum
The M.S. Statistics program is 37 semester hours (two years). Core classes include mathematical statistics, regression analysis, multivariate analysis, and experimental design.

Admission Requirements
A 3.0 overall undergraduate GPA and a GRE of at least 1000 are recommended for admission into the Statistics program.
For a final admissions decision, GRE scores do not constitute the sole criterion for consideration of the applicant, nor do GRE scores and undergraduate GPA
constitute the primary criteria to end consideration of an applicant. Based on review of a student’s undergraduate transcript, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics
may require completion of undergraduate stem courses as a condition for admission. International students must submit a TOEFL score of at least 550 paper-based or
79 iBt or 6.5 IELTS.

Financial Support
Teaching assistantships are available for approximately $13,014 / academic year. Assistantship responsibilities include grading, tutoring, teaching developmental mathematics courses and teaching
freshman statistics courses.
