***Marriage and Family in Public Life: This course explores the interaction between community, religion, politics, and marriage and the family. The course is designed to understand the processes behind changes in the family, and public responses to these changes, both in the historical context and in modern-day. The course also addresses both the public and private ramifications of changing family functions and asks whether or not the family is still the cornerstone of society, as Durkheim once stated. Consistent with these questions, consideration of how themes of liberty, freedom, and individualism have shaped both private family life and public perceptions of family is encouraged.
