ALESSANDRO BONANNO
Professor and Chair

(PhD, University of Kentucky, 1985) Professor and Department Chair. Dr. Bonanno joined the Department of Sociology at Sam Houston State University in 1996. Previously he was a Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Bonanno specializes in Economy and Society, Social Theory and Sociology of Agriculture and Food. In recent years, he has focused his research on issues related to the globalization of the economy and society. Employing the case of the agricultural and food sector, Dr. Bonanno has explored areas such as concentration of production, commodity chains, the role and actions of the environmental and labor movements, and the consequences that globalization has on democracy. He is the author and/or co-author of more than one-hundred refereed publications and the author and/or editors of twelve books which were published in English and in other six major languages. Dr. Bonanno taught and researched in Europe and Latin America. He is the director of SHSU Field School in Italy and the current (2004-2008) President of the International Rural Sociological Association.
