(PhD, University of Kentucky, 1985) Texas State University System Regents Professor, and Sam Houston State Distinguished Professor, of Sociology. Dr. Bonanno joined the Department of Sociology at Sam Houston State University in 1996 as Department Chair. He ended his tenure as Department Chair in 2011. From 2011 to 2013 he served as Scholar in Residence with the College of Humanities and Social Science. He was responsible for the development of research, online instruction and international programs within the College. In summer 2013 Dr. Bonanno returned to the Sociology Department. Previously Dr. Bonanno served as a Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Bonanno specializes in Economy and Society, Social Theory and Sociology of Agriculture and Food. In recent years, he has focused his research on issues related to the globalization of the economy and society. Employing the case of the agricultural and food sector, Dr. Bonanno has explored areas such as concentration of production, commodity chains and the consequences that globalization has on democracy. Dr. Bonanno is the author and/or co-author of more than one-hundred and twenty refereed publications and the author and/or editors of eighteen books which were published in English and in other six major languages. Dr. Bonanno taught and researched in Europe and Latin America. He is the former (2004-2008) President of the International Rural Sociological Association and the current Editor (2012-2014) of Rural Sociology.
