Who We Are

Naomi Carrier Naomi Carrier
The Director of Projects for Talking Back Living History is a gifted composer, historian, educator, author and exhibits curator who brings a fresh perspective to the study and presentation of history. Ms. Carrier is a humanities teacher at St. James School. She is also the award-winning co-author and composer of the musical, "I Am Annie Mae," an oral history by Annie Mae Hunt and Ruthe Winegarten (UT Press, 1996.) She has appeared at many universities and conferences, both as an actress, pianist, and lecturer on African American history and music, as well as the dynamics of living history interpretation. Ms. Carrier is the recipient of a number of community service awards and grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Texas Commission for the Arts, Cultural Arts Council of Houston, and 21st Century Community Learning Centers. She develops cultural and heritage tours for Texas history attractions and historic sites and is a capable event planner for workshops, conferences, community festivals and exhibits. Ms. Carrier has worked in partnership with the National Park Service, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Texas Historical Commission, and Sam Houston Museum.
Naomi Carrier has written a number of plays for both adults and children and is the creator of "Back When: Looking at the Past Through the Eyes of a Child," a character education program that employs an integrated curriculum to teach the basics of living history theater. This after school program has been successfully employed with the Prairie View College of Nursing Family & Violence Prevention program, North Forest Independent School District, Raul Yzaguirre School for Success, St. James School, and the Community Artists’ Collective Summer Workshop.

Ms. Carrier has biographical credits in Black Texas Women, (Winegarten, UT Press, 1995) and Brave Black Women, (Winegarten and Kahn, UT.)

The Cast
Talking Back Living History Theatre’s Cast consists of number of professional actors, actresses, writers, researchers, and technicians. Many of them have been in the business for over 25 years, and then there are the children and young adults with up to the minute skills in the latest technology.
