Theatre Outdoors
Talking Back Living History Theatre Workshops
Theatre Outdoors is a project in cooperation with the
Sam Houston Memorial Museum and the Sam Houston State University Department
of Theater and Dance. It is sponsored by the Huntsville Arts Council and
other local and State agencies to provide community outreach. The Museum
as an historical institution has expressed a need for more diverse programming
that will reflect all of the populations represented within the scope of
their primary mission.
Theatre Outdoors workshops provide university theater
students with opportunities to enhance their career with new possibilities
in the fields of historical interpretation and museum theater. Students
internalize much history while they research their characters, period correct
costumes, and assist with the writing, directing and performance of historical
events. What starts out as written and oral history becomes translated
into first person, dramatic storytelling as we go from the page to the
stage.
