General Sam Houston's funeral was held at the top of the stairs in this room on July 27, 1863. It was too hot to wait for relatives to come for the funeral. Sam's funeral was held in Masonic tradition, as Sam had been a Freemason for most of his political life. A few weeks later, Cherokees came to hold a service for Sam since he was also an "honorary" Cherokee from his days in Tennessee.
