Through the years, beginning with his time with the Cherokee Indians, Sam Houston gained a reputation for his colorful costumes. He especially enjoyed the attention he received when he wore the traditional attire of the Cherokee on visits to Washington. This leopard skin vest, one of his favorites, was worn by Sam Houston during the 1840s and 1850s. When asked why he chose a leopard, Houston, always the politician, explained that it was because a leopard never changes its spots
