1835

November 14th Sam Houston named Major General and Commander in Chief of the Texas army.

1836

February 23rd Siege of the Alamo Begins.
March 2nd Delegates at Washington on-the-Brazos declare Texas independent. Sam Houston signs the Declaration of Independence on his birthday and leaves to take command of the Texas army.
March 6th The Alamo falls; all 189 defenders are killed.
March 19th The Mexican Army massacres Texian troops at Goliad
April 21st The Texas Army, under Sam, attacks Santa Anna's Mexican Army at San Jacinto and, in 18 minutes, annihilates the Mexican force and wins Texas independence.
September 3rd Sam is elected the 1st President of Texas.

1846

February 21st Houston and Thomas Rusk are elected as the first U.S. Senators from Texas

1859

December 21st Houston is inaugurated as the governor of Texas. He was the only man to be elected governor of two states.

1863

July 26th Sam dies at the age of 70 in the Steamboat House in Huntsville.
