What is it?
Freshman Learning About Sam Houston - The FLASH Mentor Program is an initiative that matches Mentors (faculty, staff or administrators) with first-time freshman students. Mentors contact the students when they arrive on campus, welcome them to the community and serve as their mentor during their first year on campus. Ideally, friendships will develop in such a way that students feel comfortable in approaching their mentors for help with academic, social and personal concerns.
Who may participate?
Any freshman student who is willing to contribute to his or her success potential by developing a positive relationship with a faculty or staff member of SHSU.
How are the mentors and students matched?
In most cases mentors and students will be matched at random. In special cases, mentors and students may be matched by special skills, needs, major, hobbies, or interests. Mentors and students will be given basic information about each other.
What is expected of students?
Students are expected to meet with the mentor and to initiate some of the contact as well. Students may also contact mentors if they have special questions or problems to discuss. Students will be given the name, phone number and department address of their mentor.
What about special events?
There will be special events scheduled throughout the year for both mentors and students to interact. Information will be provided to students and mentors.
Who will be my contact person throughout the year?
Jeanine Bias, Assistant Dean of Students, coordinates the Mentor
Program, she can be reached at (936)294-3026,
jbias@shsu.edu, or in the Dean of Students' Office, LSC Building
at Suite 215.
How do I sign up?
Contact Dean Bias or come by the Dean of Students Office located in the Lowman Student Center (LSC), Suite 215.
