Q. What is Students’ Legal Services?
A. Students’ Legal Services provides legal consultation to currently enrolled students on a variety of legal problems and issues. All legal consultations are confidential and by personal appointment only.
Q. What types of legal services does Students’ Legal Services offer?
A. Students’ Legal Services offers consultation service only. The Legal Advisor is not permitted to draft documents or represent students in court.
Q. Do I have to pay for the legal consultation?
A. No. Currently enrolled students are eligible to receive legal consultations with the Legal Advisor at no additional cost because each semester enrolled students pay a student service fee.
Q. How do I get an appointment?
A. Currently enrolled students can make an appointment in person or by calling (936)294-1717.
Q. Can I still use Students’ Legal Services if I lost my Sam ID?
A. You will either have to get a temporary or new Sam ID through the Bearkat One office.
Q. Where is Students’ Legal Services located?
A. Students’ Legal Services is located in the Lowman Student Center Room 330.
Q. Is my legal consultation confidential?
A. Attorneys are bound by rules of confidentiality; therefore, all consultations with enrolled students are confidential, and no record of the legal consultation is contained in any academic or educational record.
Q. What kind of legal issues are covered by Students’ Legal Services?
A. Some areas of student concern are landlord/tenant, criminal, identity theft, consumer protection, insurance, family law, traffic tickets, automobile wrecks, employee rights, and other miscellaneous interpersonal disputes.
Q. Can I e-mail the Students’ Legal Advisor?
A. No, communicating information to the legal advisor by e-mail does not protect student confidentiality.
Q. What are the normal operational hours for Students’ Legal Services?
A. Monday through Thursday: 8:00am-5:00pm.

Q. Can I bring a friend or support person into my legal consultation?
A. All legal consultations with the Legal Advisor are confidential; therefore, if a student wishes to have someone with them during their consultation they must give written permission at the time of the appointment.
Q. Can spouses or dependents of students use Students’ Legal Services?
A. No, because these individuals are not currently enrolled students and do not pay a student service fee.
Q. What is the policy for alumni concerning usage of the Students’ Legal Services?
A. Only currently enrolled students in each semester are eligible to receive consultation with the Legal Advisor.
Q. Can faculty and staff use Students’ Legal Services?
A. Generally not because they are not students that pay a student service fee. However, if for some reason in a semester they are currently enrolled as a student then the service is available to them.
Q. Are there helpful brochures on legal issues available to students?
A. Yes, there are 124 brochures available in the Students’ Legal Services offices plus an index to these brochures and their respective websites.
