The SHSVM Seal was designed by Dr. William I. Lutterschmidt (Director of the SHSVM and Asst. Professor) and illustrated by the talented Coral McCallaster (Graphics Illustrator and Artist, Department of Zoology, University of Oklahoma). Coral generously donated her time to help us so elegantly depict the state vertebrates of Texas. These vertebrates are the Guadalupe Bass (Micropterus treculi), Gulf Cost Toad (Bufo valliceps), Texas Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum), Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), and Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus).
The SHSVM Seal also uses symbols of the Texas State Seal and an outline of the state of Texas. The single star of five points is shown and represents the "peculiar emblem" of the "Republic of Texas." A live oak branch (representing strength) and an olive branch (representing peace) were also incorporated from the Texas State Seal.
