Sam Houston State University
1997-99 SACS Self-Study
Response to Reaffirmation Committee
Report
Introduction to the 1997-99 Self-Study
Sam Houston State University has served the state of Texas as an institution of higher learning
for almost 120 years, and has functioned as an accredited member of the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools for the better part of 70 years. As we begin another self-evaluation in
support of our application for reaffirmation of accreditation, our primary purpose will be to
develop three major goals for this self-study:
a. to demonstrate continued compliance with the accreditation guidelines under
which our university and other regional institutions operate within the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools;
b. to enhance our self-knowledge, believing that we as an institution should be
keenly aware of what we are doing to fulfill our mission; and
c. to assure a continuous planning process which serves the dual role of building
upon strengths and addressing weaknesses.
