The Huntsville City Council heard an update last night from city secretary Stephanie Brimm about the City's Passport Service.
The council last heard an update about the possibility of the post office would pick up the passport processing service. The council will look at whether or not to continue this service after recieving news that the U.S. Post office for Huntsville has no intention of taking over those services.
Huntsvile has a part-time staff member in charge of processing passports, but Councilmembers expressed concern about whether or not this staff member might leave.
The city secretary's office will make a formal presentation to the council at their next scheduled meeting on June 17th. It is then that the council can take a formal action on whether or not to continue this service and for how long.
City secretary Stephanie Brimm is compiling all of the financial information and numbers to send out in a memo as soon as this week so "the council can make a more informed decision."
As of May 31st, Huntsville has processed 1,332 passports since the start of the fiscal year in October of 2007.
The City is one of few local entities that can issue passports for the United States. The next closest passport office in located in Willis.
