Welcome
Sam Houston State University has established an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) that meets all federal requirements as set forth by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW). For all projects or research involving Vertebrate Animal Subjects, the IACUC is responsible for the oversight, evaluation, and assurance of compliance for SHSU's animal care and use program as outlined in the AWA and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Links to the Certification and to the IACUC Applications are on this site. Certification (CITI training) is required before any research involving animals can begin, and a completed IACUC application form must be presented for the committee’s approval.
ALERTS FOR FACULTY, STAFF, AND STUDENTS:
I. NEW!! ATTN. all Faculty and Students ~ Federal Regulations require that all Adverse Events/Unanticipated Problems (AE/UP) involving animals and/or research personnel be promptly reported to the IACUC. You can do so now by completing the online AE/UP (Form J), which has been posted to the Application page of the IACUC website (form is pending IACUC approval). If you have any concerns or questions about what the IACUC considers a significant change, please contact Sharla Miles at 936-294-4875 or email her at iacuc@shsu.edu
II. Federal Regulations require that all significant changes to your approved Animal Use Protocol (AUP) be promptly reported to the IACUC. You can now do so by completing the online Amendment (Form G), which has been unanimously approved for use by the IACUC and has been posted to the Application page of the IACUC website. If you have any concerns or questions about what the IACUC considers a significant change, please contact Sharla Miles at 936-294-4875 or email her at iacuc@shsu.edu
III. The IACUC will not be meeting during the summer unless absolutely necessary. All Animal Use Protocols (AUPs) will be processed by the Designated Member Review (DMR) procedures. Please allow for up to 2 weeks for a typical AUP DMR review.
IV. ATTENTION ALL PIs: In an effort to comply with federal guidelines more conservatively, the IACUC is requiring all PIs to include the following information on your Animal Use Protocol regarding Literature searches for (1) Unnecessary Duplication of Research and (2) Alternatives to use of animals:
1. The databases that were searched.
2. The date the search was performed.
3. The years of citations covered by database searches.
4. The key words and/or search strategy used when searching a database.
V. ATTENTION ALL PIs: In an effort to comply with federal guidelines more conservatively, the IACUC is requiring all PIs to complete the Annual Review Form (Form F), which is located on the IACUC website: IACUC Application Forms
VI. Institutional IACUC Submission Policy: the IACUC has unanimously approved that all current IACUC submissions MUST be received by the ORSP by 5:00 pm on the Monday of the week an IACUC meeting is to occur.
VII. ATTENTION ALL PIs: As a reminder, it is the policy of the SHSU IACUC that hard copies of all IACUC applications are to be submitted to ORSP to be eligible for review. This is still the case, because you are now required to obtain your Department Chair's signature.
VIII. Any faculty or student conducting research involving Animal Subjects must complete the updated IACUC applications that are now available online. The forms are located on the Applications page on this site. For those who have saved the old forms for future use, please let them know they will need to discard those forms and replace with the new forms. Please note that the IACUC will no longer accept proposals using old forms.
IX. On February 6, 2013, the IACUC voted unanimously to not review any IACUC protocols that contain project dates that are passed the time of the next IACUC meeting.
