Welcome to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs’ (ORSP’s) Website at Sam Houston State University, located at 903 Bowers Boulevard (across from AB IV) in the Roy Adams House and reports directly to the Provost/Vice President in Academic Affairs. ORSP promotes all aspects of research and other creative endeavors at SHSU, which includes the following goals:

  • development and implementation of research and scholarly activities
  • assisting in locating resources to support this activity
  • creating policies to provide an environment conducive to scholarship
  • promoting the importance and visibility of the institution’s research activities

To accomplish this mission, ORSP under the direction of Dr. Jerry Cook, Associate Vice President, provides expertise and guidance to faculty, staff, and students to facilitate the accomplishment of their scholarly goals. The office will assist with the following:

  • research development
  • proposal development
  • compliance (e.g., use of human and animal subjects)
  • the dissemination of results

As of May 2009, The Office of Research Administration (ORA), formerly Contracts and Grants, under the direction of Mr. Dan Davis, Associate Vice President, has merged with ORSP to facilitate both pre-award and post-award research administration.  The office will assist faculty with the following:

  • budget preparation and approval
  • routing of proposals
  • proposal submissions
  • post-award grant management
    • review and preparation of award documents
    • negotiating terms and conditions of awards
    • compliance review
    • the financial administration of the award

Faculty committees overseen by ORSP include:

IRB (Use of Human Subjects): This 21-member committee reviews proposed research to ensure that the proposed project follows federal guidelines and the accepted ethical principles meet that goal.
IACUC (Use of Animal Subjects): This 6-member committee was established to oversee and evaluate all aspects of SHSU's care and use of laboratory animals for research or instructional purposes.
Faculty Research Council (FRC): This 9-member committee, which is chaired by the Associate Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs, supervises the following:

    • disbursement of state research enhancement funds to support research carried out by faculty members within SHSU
    • the formulation of guidelines and the coordination, organization, and active encouragement of faculty research using these state funds
