Biodiversity and Systematics of Insects
Sibyl Rae Bucheli, Assistant Professor
My areas of research include molecular and morphological evolution of the insect orders Lepidoptera, Diptera and Coleoptera; evolution and speciation of Lepidoptera and Coleoptera and their larval host-plants; the use of Lepidoptera as indicator species in biological surveys; the use of ecological and behavioral data in phylogenetic studies, the evolution of insect genitalia and their utility as phylogenetic characters; and insect succession on carrion in southwestern, subtropical Texas. REU projects will focus on active aspects of this research and may include surveys of insect biodiversity of the Pineywoods ecoregion or across the other ecoregions of Texas, surveys of carrion feeding insects, investigation of morphological and molecular characters useful in phylogenetic studies.
