Required Advisement
Once you reach Senior classification with 90 completed hours of course work, you are required to be advised prior to registration in each term until you complete your degree requirements.
See the Sam Center on campus to set up an appointment with an academic advisor or you may also see the advisor from your academic department if you so wish.
Application for Degree
Submit your Application for Degree by the deadline date as noted in the Academic Calendar for the term in which you plan to complete your degree requirements.
Transfer Course Work
Immediately upon submission of the Application for Degree, report any transfer course work currently in progress for your degree to the Registrar’s Office.
The Monday following the commencement ceremonies, verify that final transfer grades are reported to the Registrar’s Office by the transfer institution. Transfer grades are due no later than the deadline for SHSU final grades. Deadline dates may be found on the Academic Calendar.
Degree Plan Exceptions
Have your advisor initiate any Exceptions to be processed to your current degree plan prior to the term of your graduation. All Exceptions should be received in the Registrar’s Office no later than the 4th class day of Summer term for Summer degree candidates, or the 12th class day of the Fall/Spring term for Fall/Spring degree candidates.
Check your Graduation Status
You will receive an e-mail regarding your graduation status afterwhich you may go online and verify via the Advisor Notes on your degree plan in Degree Works. Any discrepancies noted in your graduation status should be reported immediately to your academic advisor who can then forward the appropriate information to the Registrar. (Degree evaluations will only be available for students who submit an Application for Degree to the Registrar’s Office.)
Two weeks after the commencement ceremony, confirm your final graduation status through the Advisor Notes section of your degree plan.
Your degree plan can be found using My Sam. Please note that there may be a two week processing period for degree evaluations to be completed by the Registrar’s Office.
Name in Commencement Program – Buckley Amendment Information
If you have invoked the Buckley Amendment to restrict your public directory information, your name will not be published in the commencement program.
However, if you prefer your name be published in the commencement program, you must submit a request to release your name for public directory prior to the printing of the commencement program. (Note: The commencement program goes to press three weeks prior to the commencement ceremony date.)
After filling out the Buckley Amendment form, submit the request to release your name to the Registrar’s Office. Please note that in doing so, your information will become public directory information once again.
Cap and Gown
Purchase your cap and gown through the Barnes and Noble Bookstore prior to the commencement ceremony. (To view the commencement ceremony schedule, visit the Commencement Schedule website.)
Permanent Mailing Address
Verify your permanent mailing address via My Sam to ensure that your diploma is mailed to the appropriate address. This should be verified the week that final grades are due (See Academic Calendar for final grade deadline.)
Outstanding Balance
All outstanding balances must be paid in full prior to the release of diplomas. Be sure to check your student account via My Sam for any outstanding balances. See the Bursar’s Office to make your payment.
Exit Counseling for Financial Aid
If you have financial aid assistance, you must login to the Financial Aid site via My Sam to complete Exit Counseling for Financial Aid. Failing to do so will prohibit you from ordering an official transcript upon the posting of your degree. For more information, please visit the Financial Aid website.
SHSU Alumni License Plate
SHSU Alumni License Plate Holders will be made available free of charge to all graduates for a brief period before graduation. For more information, click here.
