Outdoor Recreation at Sam Houston State University is a multifaceted program consisting of six primary components:
Trips and Workshops focus on having fun while exploring, experiencing and learning in a variety of natural environments.
The Climbing Center features a 35 foot climbing wall, bouldering island and all the requisite gear for you to achieve new heights.
Equipment rentals allow you to pursue your own adventures, whether it’s an afternoon on the river or a week in the mountains.
Bearkat Camp is a spirit and traditions camp for incoming freshmen.
University Camp is a one of a kind recreation and retreat facility that when completed will feature cabins, dining facilities, sports fields, boating, ropes courses, biking and hiking trails, and a retreat and meeting center.
SHSU Outdoors also provides field based technical support for academic research expeditions here in the United States and at locations around the globe.
Our aim is to provide the university community the chance to live the life less ordinary.
So jump in, play hard… and get outside.

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows no victory nor defeat.
