My research is focused on family psychology and addictive behaviors, particularly the treatment of adolescent substance use. I have a long-standing interest in the effectiveness of family-based treatments, and for the last six years have been working with colleagues at the University of Miami examining the effectiveness of Multidimensional Family Therapy for adolescent drug abuse. I am an investigator in the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) funded Criminal Justice-Drug Abuse Treatment Studies (http://www.cjdats.org), where I have been a member of a research team that conducted a nationally representative, multilevel survey of substance abuse treatment practices in the adult and juvenile justice systems, and am involved in managing two randomized controlled trials of adolescents involved in the juvenile justice system. In addition to these studies, I have worked with students conducting theses and dissertations on diverse topics; examples include examining subtypes of female sex offenders, the taxonicity of psychopathy in incarcerated women, a meta-analysis of an empirically supported treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder, a randomized pilot study testing the effectiveness of an intervention for children from divorced families, and examining coping and benefit-finding processes among caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's Disease and custodial grandparents.

The common goal of my research is to strengthen family relationships in at-risk youth and improve services for adolescents with substance abuse and associated problems.
