Admission Process

Application Requirements:

For admission consideration, students must have received at least a Bachelor's degree. In addition to completing the program application, applicants must complete the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test and have the scores sent to the Program. The GRE Subject Test in Psychology is recommended, but not required for admission. Those who enter the program with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree will complete the Clinical Psychology Master's degree program at Sam Houston State University during the first two years of doctoral study. Those entering with a Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MS) degree will need to have their graduate transcripts and other appropriate material reviewed by program faculty in order to determine which of the graduate courses can be accepted for transfer credit. Typically, those entering the program with a MA in Clinical Psychology will complete the program faster than those who enter with a BA/BS.

Applicants are asked to provide the following:

GRE general exam scores

Original transcripts from all academic institutions.
(Including presently enrolled, if applicable)

A 3.5 overall grade point average (GPA) is recommended.

Three Letters of Recommendation
(Two from professors preferred)

Personal Essay

Vita or Resume'

Application Deadline:

The deadline for receipt of admission applications for the following fall semester is December 1st.

The Fall semester is the only semester in which new students are accepted into the program. Shortly after the December 1st deadline, the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program faculty meet to review the applicants. This committee emphasizes academic accomplishment and potential (as reflected in GPA and GRE scores), and the applicant's fit with the program (as reflected by the personal essay and letters of recommendation). Those students who appear to be most promising are placed on the short list and invited to campus for group interviews (or phone interviews).

The entire program faculty participate in the interview process. Students are asked about their interests in clinical psychology and their specific reasons for being interested in our program. Students are also asked about their past research and/or clinical experience.

Following the interview, the admissions committee meets to decide on a final sorting of applicants. Students are either accepted, rejected, or placed on a wait list. Official letters are then sent to the applicants.
