| Sam Houston State University | Issue 6: February, 2003 |
|
DATE: January 24, 2003 Yesterday we received a memo from the Governor's Office informing us that we are to reduce our current year's general appropriation budget by 7%. This mandate means that we are required to cut $2,587,000 from our budget between now and August 31 of this year. We must report our plan to The Texas State University System Office by February 4, so that they can accumulate each University's data and report the System plan to the Governor by February 6. I have asked the Vice Presidents to meet with their people to discuss how we should proceed. After the Vice Presidents have received your information, the Cabinet will meet to finalize our plan. Until our final plan has been submitted in early February no new budget positions, from any fund source, will be approved. Please know that although this is a significant problem I do not see it as a crisis. No jobs will be eliminated as a result of this required budget reduction. Sam Houston State is in excellent financial condition as the result of prudent fiscal management over the years, and we will take advantage of this situation to help see us through the lean times ahead. Thank you in advance for your cooperation as we make plans to meet the Governor's mandate. |
