DATE: February 4, 2003 The Vice Presidents and I met yesterday morning to make the final decisions on budget reductions for the current academic year. The plan was transmitted to the System Office late yesterday afternoon. We are hopeful, although not certain, that we will not be asked to make additional cuts in the current year. Our reductions were made with several issues in mind, primarily that there will be no job losses, and that the core academic function of the university will be protected. Almost one-half of the cuts were made through a hiring freeze that has been put into effect immediately. Additional funds will be saved through such measures as a freeze on foreign and out-of-state travel, the postponement or elimination of certain capital expenditures, the substitution of compensatory time for paid overtime for the remainder of the year, and certain energy conservation measures. Although some impact from a cut of such magnitude in the middle of an academic year is unavoidable, I am hopeful that you will not find your work environment seriously affected. Thank you for your cooperation to date in this difficult, but necessary, endeavor. |
