Issue six of the President's Update focuses primarily on the building, additions, renovations and projects currently underway at Sam Houston State University. At least once a semester, I will be sharing items of importance with the University Community through this electronic newsletter, President’s Update. I will also send out quick messages periodically regarding important issues or events. Please share this communication with those in your departments who may not have access to a computer. I will also have this posted on the President's Website. Thank you. James F. Gaertner, President |
Budget Concerns I want to make sure to keep you informed about budget issues as they involve Sam Houston State University. January 24th I sent an electronic memo to the entire Campus Community about the initial communication from the Governor's Office calling for a 7% reduction in this year's budget. February 4th I sent another memo outlining the plan of action formulated together with the Vice Presidents. It is easy to understand that the State budget problems are an area of concern across campus. I have been to Austin twice in the past two weeks, and I am convinced that the situation is a long way from being resolved. The legislators are still in the process of gathering information, so most of what you read or hear about ultimate outcomes is supposition at this point. To date I have not heard additional serious discussion about future budget cuts for the current fiscal year. Please know that as soon as I have any definitive information, I will share it with the University Community. |
Staff Council This past fall I announced the appointment of 10 employees to serve as members of an interim staff council through an article on Today@Sam. I would like to commend the interim staff council for their hard work. They will soon be contacting all University staff regarding information meetings for your area and upcoming elections. They are also in the process of setting up a Staff Council Website where you will be able to find out more about the Staff Council. This mission of this new organization is to serve as an advisory body to the President of the University, conveying information and making recommendations regarding interests and concerns of the University Staff. Sam Houston State University is a fine institution and a wonderful place to work. I would like to encourage each of you to help make it even better by becoming actively involved in the new Staff Council. |

Major Project Overview
Sixteen major projects are currently under various stages of development. Each project has an associated Building or Project Committee made up of those who will be using the facility and understand the usage needs. They are working along with the Building Project Coordinator, who is assigned by Physical Plant. These teams of people work together with the architects during the planning and design periods. Then the Building Project Coordinator oversees the project through construction completion. Each project has also been approved under different funding sources and methods. It is important to note that for several projects we have taken advantage of the bond market's all time lows. Because of the various methods we have used to fund the projects, no project is currently subject to the State budget reductions. That is not to say we might not ultimately find ourselves in a position of having to delay one or more projects, but at this time we are moving forward.

Campus Signage Project Campus Signage sends a message about our University, and it should reflect to any visitor that we care about helping them get where they need to go. It was an item mentioned in the Campus Master Plan, and when the issue of signage improvement in Huntsville surfaced as a significant part of the results of the local Tourism Study, Sam Houston State University became a willing partner. | More
Key/Card Access The University has heightened concern for security of the campus buildings and property. The current key entry system is easily compromised when building entry keys are lost or duplicated. Since the entry doors are the first line of security for campus buildings, the replacement of the lock and key system with a card access system will provide greater building security and more accountability of those authorized for entry into buildings. | More
