Hello and welcome to Sam Houston State University. My name is Jim Gaertner and as President and an alumnus of Sam Houston State, I am very pleased to welcome you to this very special university.
We were founded in 1879 and I am convinced that Sam Houston State offers you a classic, collegiate atmosphere that is rich in tradition and solid in academic programming. We are proud to be a welcoming and friendly university where students come first.

President Gaertner announces his retirement:

To the University Community:
Earlier today, at the Faculty and Staff picnic at Old Main Pit, I announced my intention to retire as President of Sam Houston State University effective August 31, 2010. I notified Chancellor Matthews of this decision earlier this week.
Nancy and I have enjoyed this time of our lives more than I can describe. It has been an incredible honor to serve with the entire university community as president of this grand old university. We have been able to renew old friendships, and make many new friends, while serving in a position that has brought us tremendous joy and fulfillment.
Please accept my profound thanks and appreciation for your support and commitment to Sam Houston State during my tenure.
