New Master's Program Provides Diverse Opportunities

With unemployment rates holding at around 9.7 percent this year, Sam Houston State University will begin offering courses toward degree this fall in what could be a recession-resistant field. The geography program’s master’s degree in geographic information systems provides a skill set that can be used in the oil and gas industry, local government, law enforcement, marketing and public health. SHSU Recognized for Student Success, Grad Rates

Sam Houston State University is among 15 public universities across the nation recently recognized for “outperforming most similar institutions in helping students stay on track and graduate” in a new report from the nonprofit Southern Regional Education Board. Details.

Initiative Helps Students Move Forward

In recognition of National Foster Care Month, held annually in May, Sam Houston State University has taken steps to become a haven for students from fostered backgrounds and help them move forward with their education with a new initiative. Details.

 

SHSU To Host Youth Summer Camps

It won’t just be hardworking students diligently studying and attending class on campus come June, because during the summer, Sam Houston State University will also hold several summer camps to entertain and educate many different personalities. Details.

Student Jumps For Success

Sam Houston State University has its own jump rope star, graduating senior Nick Woodard, from Houston, who competed against and personally knows several members of Saltare, who were featured on MTV's America's Best Dance Crew. Details.

Student Shuttle Survey Coming Up

Beginning Thursday, April 22, the Parking and Transportation Office will begin conducting a student shuttle survey. This survey is designed to determine students’ thoughts and attitudes on a shuttle service, including potential routes, costs and payment methods. All of this information will be analyzed to determine if a shuttle service is operationally feasible and economically viable. The survey will close at 5 p.m. Friday, April 30. Students should watch their Sam email account for more information, which contains a link to the survey.

Alumni Association To Recognize Service

Five individuals who have supported Sam Houston State University "above and beyond the call of duty" with their time, professional expertise, and resources and who have displayed outstanding commitment to their respective communities as well will be honored May 7 with SHSU Alumni Association Service Awards. The honorees are Dan Richard Beto, Gordon Brown, Nancy Gaertner, John McManners and Erin Steele.  Details.

The Department of Student Activities recognized 24 students, faculty, staff and organizations for their contributions and their leadership during the 16th Annual Sammy Awards Wednesday evening. The list of award winners is here.

Campaign Seeks To Drive Up Membership, Endowment

The SHSU Alumni Association is embarking upon its first Life Member Drive, hoping to secure 100 new Life Members and send the Life Member Endowment past the $1 million mark. Details.

Abbott, Townsend To Give Commencement Addresses

Executive commissioner of the Texas Youth Commission Cherie Townsend and Attorney General Greg Abbott will address approximately 1,495 undergraduate and 313 graduates students as they receive their degrees at Sam Houston State University's spring commencement ceremonies on May 14-15. Details.

Congrats, Orange Pride, Sammy And All-Girl Cheer!

Sam Houston State University took away top honors in the National Cheerleaders Association/National Dance Association Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship held at Daytona Beach, Fla. April 7-11. The Orange Pride Dance Team and Sammy the Bearkat won the 2010 national championship in each of their categories. Details.
