SHSU Has New Rodeo Coach

Edward "Bubba" Miller

Edward “Bubba” Miller, hired this week as Sam Houston State University’s new rodeo coach, is equally at home shoeing horses or saving souls.

Miller, who earned his bachelor’s degree from SHSU in 1997 and was a member of the rodeo team, is also a certified farrier and the ordained pastor of the Branded for Christ Cowboy Church, located on I45 12 miles north of Huntsville.

Miller will coach the university’s men’s and women’s teams with a goal of returning them to the national prominence that produced more National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) championships than any other school.

“We haven’t had a national title in 12 years,” said Miller. “Next year’s women’s team will be extremely strong and has a good chance to win the College National Finals championship.”

This year’s women’s team won the Southern Regional championship and finished 13th out of 36 teams at the national finals. While several of the men’s team members qualified individually, that team finished third in the region and was not eligible to compete nationally.

Miller has worked with a number of area kids who have competed successfully in a number of youth events.

“Teaching kids how to rodeo is my passion,” he said. “Getting to coach the Sam Houston teams is a dream come true.”

Miller said he has been rodeoing since he was “old enough to walk.” growing up in a rodeo family in Woodville and taking after his dad and sisters. At SHSU he won the Southern Region bareback title and finished in the top five in the nation when he was a senior.

He is also a former member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, the United Professional Rodeo Association, and the Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association. He rodeoed professionally for 12 years, winning the bareback money title for events sponsored by Copenhagen/Skoal in 2000.

Miller and his wife, Tammy, who is a teacher at Huntsville Elementary, have a son and a daughter.

An Associated Press story in which Doug Kingman, assistant professor of agricultural mechanization, discussed the use of animal fat as a possible replacement for petroleum as a fuel source has appeared on CNNMoney, Yahoo! Finance Canada, CNBC, Capitol Press Agriculture Weekly, the Detriot News, the Boston Globe and a number of other media outlets.

Larry Hoover, criminal justice professor and Police Research Center director, discussed problems with releasing raw police incident reports and other crime statistics on the Internet in an article by the Dallas Morning News that was also picked up by TMCnews.

Research by Sibyl Bucheli, entomologist and visiting assistant professor of biology, and Joan Bytheway, assistant professor of ciminal justice, was recently featured in ScienceNews, the magazine of the Society For Science & The Public. In the interview, Buscheli discussed the use of a caterpillars of the casemaking clothes moth, Tinea pellionella, that can yield enough DNA to identify the deceased if one eats human hair from a corpse.
