Backroom Curiosities: an exhibit in the Katy and E. Don Walker Sr. Education Center Exhibit Gallery. Curated museum staff member Casey Roon, the exhibit displays items rarely seen by the public from our backrooms, including pictures, furniture, dresses, quilts and an examination table. Signatures of our Forefathers—Quill, Ink and the Declaration of Independence: a Sam Houston Memorial Museum presentation, from 9 a.m. to noon at Bear Bend Cabin, on the museum grounds. Museum staff will discuss famous autographs, including those on the Declaration of Independence, and participants will be allowed to make their own mark using a quill pen. Study Skills Summer Workshop Series Two: a series of four, one-hour study skills sessions designed to provide an introduction to study skills and teach about procrastination, time management, reading textbooks, test taking and stress management. Multiple sessions will be held daily in the Student Advising and Mentoring Center, located in College of Humanities and Social Science Building Room 170. Log Cabin Construction Part II—Daubing and Chinking for Kids and Adults: a Sam Houston Memorial Museum presentation, from 9 a.m. to noon at Raven’s Rangers Cabin, on the museum grounds. In the second half of the log cabin demonstrations, museum staff will enlist the help of the public to chink and daub some of the museum’s aging log cabins. Participants do not need to attend the first part to attend the second part, but they are encouraged to wear grubby clothes. A $5 recommended donation per person. Frontier Skills Demonstration for Kids and Adults: a Sam Houston Memorial Museum presentation, from 9 a.m. to noon at Bear Bend Cabin, on the museum grounds. Museum staff will introduce the wide array of tools pioneers used to survive in the frontier and attendees will be allowed to practice with tomahawks, shooting black powder guns, starting fires without matches and more. The Honor of Memory—the 150th Anniversary of Gen. Sam Houston’s Death and Funeral: a Sam Houston Memorial Museum event, from 9 a.m. to noon at the museum and the museum grounds.
