Welcome Week Activities Introduce New Students To Campus

The Department of Student Activities will build upon SHSU traditions by introducing new students to campus with a number of Welcome Week activities.

Welcome Week will kick off Thursday (Aug.20) when several campus organizations and volunteers help with “New Student Move-In” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at residence halls around campus.

“Welcome Week is really the ‘grand opening’ for college life for most students,” said Student Activities manager Brandon Cooper. “It’s an opportunity to showcase all of the wonderful areas and programs that we have at Sam Houston State University and welcome either new students attending or the students returning.”

On Friday (Aug. 21), the Office of Multicultural and International Student Services will help freshman and new students to “Find Their Classes With SAMentors,” meeting at 11 a.m. at the alumni fountain in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area.

That evening, students are invited to a free movie, “Terminator Salvation,” hosted by the Program Council, at 7 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Theater.

Motivational speaker and SHSU alumnus Kozhi Makai will encourage students to make the most of their college experience with a keynote address to new students and their parents during the “New Student Convocation” Saturday (Aug. 22). The ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum.

Following the convocation, students are invited to join the “Recreational Sports Block Party” fun with food, games, prizes, face painting, archery and a variety of other activities from 7-10 p.m. at Intramural Field No. 1.

Sunday (Aug. 23), students will have a chance to learn about different faiths represented on campus during the “Religious Organizations’ Fair,” from 4-7 p.m. at the various religious houses and locations on campus.

Afterward, the “Raven Bash” will provide students with a movie, swimming, henna tattoos and food at 7 p.m. at the Health and Kinesiology Center pool area.

Students can enjoy a free night of karaoke, food, fun and prizes on Monday (Aug. 24) evening at “The Kat’s Meow,” from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Kat Klub.

The Office of MISS will host “Unity Fest,” a celebration of diversity with fellow SHSU students, faculty and staff with free food and giveaways on Tuesday (Aug. 25) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the LSC Mall Area.

On Wednesday (Aug. 26) Program Council will host its “Make A Float” activity from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the LSC Mall Area.

That evening, students can try their luck at the annual “PC Casino Night,” from 6-10 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom. Participants will be able to play free casino games for the opportunity to win prizes.

Thursday’s (Aug. 27) activities include “PC Grab and Go,” during which students can receive items that introduce the campus community to the new programming board, from noon to 2 p.m. in the LSC Mall Area.

Students will also be informed on how to “kick butt” nutritionally on foods they love to eat, including pizza, burgers and chips with a presentation on “Fighting the Freshman 15,” at 12:30 p.m. in the LSC Mall Area.

The following day is Bearkat Spirit Friday (Aug. 28), during which students and faculty can win a prize for wearing orange or an SHSU logo, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the LSC Mall Area.

At 11:30 a.m., Student Activities will host a “Bearkat Picnic,” welcoming students to lunch till 1 p.m. at Austin Hall.

Later that night, students are invited to attend PC’s Drive-In Movie: “Star Trek” at 8:30 p.m. in Colony Park.

Monday (Aug. 31) will conclude Welcome Week with SAMentor Pair night, during which all of the SAMentor Protégés are officially paired with their mentors, at 6 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Theater.

Brian Domitrovic, assistant professor of history, was part of a panel that discussed the decline of the dollar and how to fix it on the Oct. 22 episode of CNBC's The Kudlow Report. Following the segment, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who also appeared on the show, plugged Domitrovic's book Econoclasts. In addition, he was one of the experts who discussed the gross domestic product in a recent Public Radio International story.
