Sam Houston State University will join other colleges across the nation in spreading awareness of alcohol abuse with National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week activities beginning Monday (Oct. 5).
To kick off the week the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Initiative will host “Know Your Numbers,” Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area. Members of the ADAI will inform students about the 5-4-2 framework, 80 versus 100 proof, .08 Blood Alcohol Concentration and the importance of knowing the effects body weight, gender and serving size have on alcohol impairment.
“Plants are for pickin’—not sniffing, smoking, or snorting” will also take place on Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LSC Mall Area. Justin Williams, SHSU botanist, will show students the effects certain trees, shrubs, plants and flowers can have on a person’s body and mind when abused.
On Tuesday (Oct. 6) students will have the opportunity to participate in an interactive exhibit which will inform them of “The Three Rs of Alcohol Poisoning:” recognize, respond and report. The event will take place in the LSC Mall Area from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
That afternoon, Susan Wagener, SHSU alumna and traumatic grief counselor for MADD and Grief Share will share her first-hand story about the dangers of overconsumption while celebrating your 21st birthday. The discussion will take place in LSC room 302 from 2-3 p.m. Refreshments will be served during the presentation.
“This is a truly touching, personal, and informative session that you don’t want to miss,” said Lisa Joyner, ADAI assistant.
Wednesday’s (Oct. 7) activities will include “Climb to 21, 50, and Beyond” and “Milk-Tales.” For “Climb to 21, 50 and Beyond,” ROTC cadets will team up with students to reach the top of the climbing wall. As students reach the top they will achieve points for taking the proper actions regarding alcohol use.
The ADAI will be handing out “moo-shakes” during the “Milk-Tales” event, during which students will be encouraged to share their sober stories about an alcohol-free event with milk and take pictures with their “milk-staches” to submit to America’s Milk Processors Corporation.
Both events will take place in the LSC Mall Area from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Huntsville’s Memorial Hospital Chemical Addiction Recovery and Education team will educate students on recognizing the signs of drug and alcohol addiction on Thursday (Oct. 8) for the “Time to CARE” activity, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LSC Mall Area.
Also at that time in the LSC Mall Area, professionals from the SHSU Counseling Center will encourage students to take “the most important step of your life” with confidential sessions including an assessment with students about alcohol problems for “Safe Steps.”
Friday’s (Oct. 9) activities will show students the legal issues concerning alcohol.
Sgt. Scott Zella will share information on consumption and serving laws enforced by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission during the “21—Legal and Liable” presentation in the LSC Mall Area from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
To end the week “DWI: A Bloody Nightmare,” will be held at the Criminal Justice Center-Upper Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Clinical assistant professor of criminal justice Kelly Weeks will discuss the current alcohol and drug laws in Texas.
The events held throughout the week will give students a better understanding of alcohol abuse and responsibility, according to Joyner.

Brian Domitrovic, assistant professor of history, was part of a panel that discussed the decline of the dollar and how to fix it on the Oct. 22 episode of CNBC's The Kudlow Report. Following the segment, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who also appeared on the show, plugged Domitrovic's book Econoclasts. In addition, he was one of the experts who discussed the gross domestic product in a recent Public Radio International story.
