KSHU The Kat Switches To High-Def Broadcast, Plans For New Programs

In the familiar atmosphere of hurried deadlines and consistent flurry of activity that ensues each day as radio broadcasts reach the students of Sam Houston State University, there have been a few behind-the-scenes transformations underway at KSHU FM 90.5.

As a department that offers students the opportunity to work with the most up-to-date technology, the campus radio station is now broadcasting in high-definition, the only station in Huntsville to do so.

In addition, there is now a student class producing programs for KSHU 90.5. On Mondays at noon, there is an hour-long broadcast in Spanish with Spanish music, which the department hopes to expand as listener feedback is received, according to co-curricular advisor for the SHSU radio station Carol Cooper.

It is followed by an hour-long program of world music called World Rhythms, produced by Ben Nyabadza. It focuses on reaching the international student population at Sam Houston. The next hour another program featuring Texas music and information is broadcast, produced by Austin Kaunch.

On Tuesdays at noon, there is a planned regular student showcase, where some of the other programs produced by students in MCM 499, an upper-level independent study and research class for mass communications majors, will be played, such as the Shane Parks Sports Show.

On Wednesdays, Wednesday Watch, a one hour current affairs and events magazine show is broadcast from noon to 1 p.m., produced by Danny Gearheart and comprised of five student contributors. Brandon McDonald will also produce a show that will fit into one of the evening hip-hop programs, featuring campus poets and rap artists.

“SHSU students have always had the opportunity to be a DJ and it was time to offer more to our students,” Cooper said. “The public should be reminded that this is an educational training ground and not everything will be perfect. But we felt that it was important to give our students as much experience in planning, writing and producing radio content.”

SHSU 'In the News'

Brian Domitrovic, assistant professor of history, was part of a panel that discussed the decline of the dollar and how to fix it on the Oct. 22 episode of CNBC's The Kudlow Report. Following the segment, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who also appeared on the show, plugged Domitrovic's book Econoclasts. In addition, he was one of the experts who discussed the gross domestic product in a recent Public Radio International story.
