SHSU Celebrates Sammy's Birthday For Homecoming 2009

Senior quarterback Blake Joseph ran for two touchdowns and helped lead the Bearkats to a 44-21 victory over the Nicholls Colonels in the Southland Conference opener before 11,244 fans at the Bearkats Homecoming game.


Halftime activities included wishing Sammy a happy 50th birthday (officially Dec. 14) as he jumped out of his own birthday cake (left) and recognizing some of the many students who have portrayed the mascot over the years (right).

Juniors Tiffany Goebel and Daniel Pawlowski were crowned the 2009 Homecoming queen and king during halftime. Goebel is an interdisciplinary agriculture major from Galena Park, and Pawlowski is political science major from Houston.


Bearkat fans of all ages joined the Kat Krazies (right) in "painting up" for the football game during the tailgate party (left).


Among the highlights of Homecoming week was Thursday's parade. Float winners included Delta Tau Delta fraternity (top left), first place; agriculture and industrial sciences (top right), second place; SHSU Lion's Club (bottom left), third place; and Diamond Kats (bottom right), "Best Use of Theme." Other winners included Kappa Alpha fraternity for “most creative,” Project Sunshine for “committee’s choice,” and Delta Tau Delta for “best all-round." — Photos by Brian Blalock.

SHSU 'In the News'

Brian Domitrovic, assistant professor of history, was part of a panel that discussed the decline of the dollar and how to fix it on the Oct. 22 episode of CNBC's The Kudlow Report. Following the segment, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who also appeared on the show, plugged Domitrovic's book Econoclasts. In addition, he was one of the experts who discussed the gross domestic product in a recent Public Radio International story.
