The University Hotel will be opening a new bistro-style coffee bar on campus in less than two days.
The CJ Café, located between the Criminal Justice Center and the Bill Blackwood LEMIT building, will change to CJava on Thursday (Oct. 15).
The CJava is expected to be a fun laid-back spot for students, faculty, staff, university hotel guests and the community to gather, according to A.K. Khan, director of the University Hotel.
The coffee bar will offer a selection of specialty free-trade organic coffees that are custom roasted by a local Houston coffee roaster, as well as popular coffee drinks such as espresso, lattes, smoothies and chai tea.
Breakfast items, including kolaches, donuts, bagels, and biscuits and gravy, will be offered and made fresh every day, and a variety of salads, soups, pastas, baked potatoes, specialty sandwiches prepared on homemade baked bread and desserts will be available for lunch.
The CJava will be led by executive chef Brian Hunziker, who has worked at a number of local establishments.
“Employment opportunities for students will be available. Eighty to 90 percent of the employees at the CJava will be students,” Khan said.
With the opening of CJava, the University Hotel management also will hold a contest for the selection of the new logo and slogan for the coffee bar.
“In an effort to allow the SHSU community to feel a part of the CJava students, faculty, and staff will cast their vote on one of four designs and are encouraged to submit a slogan idea,” said Khan.
The winning logo will be decided upon by the most votes and the winning slogan will be chosen by a committee. The winner of the contest will receive a new iPod nano.
The CJava will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Brian Domitrovic, assistant professor of history, was part of a panel that discussed the decline of the dollar and how to fix it on the Oct. 22 episode of CNBC's The Kudlow Report. Following the segment, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who also appeared on the show, plugged Domitrovic's book Econoclasts. In addition, he was one of the experts who discussed the gross domestic product in a recent Public Radio International story.
