Homecoming Events Set To 'Paint The Town'


SHSU will ‘paint the town orange’ with Bearkat spirit with a week-long series of events for Homecoming 2003 on Nov. 8.

Activities will kick off on Monday (Nov. 3) with the Kick-off Rally, sponsored by Student Activities. The event will be held at 12 p.m. in the LSC Mall Area.

Homecoming candidates will be announced and the Orange Pride dance team, as well as the cheerleaders will be on hand to prepare students for the week, according to Tiffany Flenoy, Program Council president.

On Tuesday, Student Activities will host “Build Your Own Ice Cream Float” at 12 p.m. in the LSC Lobby and “Get Your Bowl On V” at 9:30 p.m. at Huntsville Lanes.

On Wednesday, Student Activities will sponsor “I Bet You Will” at 12 p.m. in the LSC Mall Area. That night, the SHSU volleyball team will take on Southern Methodist University at 7 p.m. in the Johnson Coliseum.

The annual Sam Jam Carnival will also be held on Wednesday, at 8 p.m., in downtown Huntsville parking lots and will feature carnival rides, food and prizes. The Homecoming Kat Kall will be held during Sam Jam, with the football team and the band to get students “rallied up for the game,” Flenoy said.

Students will have the opportunity to make their own specialty key chains at 11 a.m. in the LSC Mall Area on Thursday. Student Activities will also be showing “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Theatre, in downtown Huntsville.

On Friday, the Golden Circle Luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. to honor the class of 1953 and before. At 2 p.m., the Alumni Association will honor Ron and Ruth Blatchley for their gift of a new clock at the “Dedication of the Clock.” The dedication will be held at the Alumni Fountain.

Recreational Sports will sponsor the annual Raven Run 5K, a 3.1-mile run or one-mile walk open to alumni, faculty, staff, students and student organizations, at 5:30 p.m. at the Health and Kinesiology Center. Registration is $5 in advance and $7 on race day. Anyone interested can call Megan Thomas at 936.294.1985 for more information.

At 6 p.m., the Alumni Association will honor the five SHSU graduates selected to receive the 2003 Distinguished Alumni Awards. This year’s recipients include Tom Ely; W. Allen Gage; Preston Johnson, Jr.; Mark J. Kroll; and Michael A. Lytle.

The volleyball team will take on Nicholls State at 7 p.m. in the Johnson Coliseum and, also at 7 p.m., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., will sponsor their Greek Show, an event that attracts collegiate students from across the state. On Saturday, Homecoming events will begin at 8 a.m. with an Alumni Coffee, sponsored by the Alumni Association. Coffee and pastries will be served on the patio of Academic Building II.

The parade line-up will also begin at 8 a.m. in the 20th street parking lot, and the parade will begin at 10 a.m. along Sam Houston Avenue. Those interested in participating in the parade must sign up in the Office of Student Activities by 5 p.m. on Nov. 5.

Following the parade, alumni receptions will be held for various departments. The family and consumer science alumni reception will begin at 10:45 a.m. in Academic Building II; the agriculture alumni reception will begin at 11 a.m. in the Thomason Building; RTV alumni open house will be at 11 a.m. in the Dan Rather Communications Building; and the honors alumni reception will also be at 11 a.m. in Academic Building IV, in the SAM Center.

The Lettermen Association Hall of Honor Luncheon will induct four men into the Hall of Honor at 11:30 a.m. in the LSC Ballroom. Tickets are on sale until Oct. 31 and must be purchased in advance. For more information, contact Jack D. Kyle at 936.295.5953 or

The political science department will hold an alumni banquet at 12 p.m. in LSC Room 320. Curtiss Brown, Jr., director of community services for Galveston County will be the guest speaker. Homecoming activities will culminate at 12 p.m. at the tailgate party for the football game against Northwestern State, which will begin at 2 p.m.

The Alumni Association will be on hand for the tailgate party with a moonwalk, food and drinks sponsored by Citizens Bank, and Student Activities will provide food and announce the Homecoming court.

The military science department will have a paintball game, where students will have 10 chances to hit a target for $1, and will be selling raffle tickets for a chance to fire the cannon at halftime for $1 each. Tickets will be sold until a few minutes before halftime, according to Major Christopher Wooten.

Rounding out Homecoming weekend, the volleyball team will take on Southeastern Louisiana State at 7 p.m. in the Johnson Coliseum.
