Swansbourne Presents Third Performance
in Beethoven Series

On Sunday, Nov. 24 at 4 p.m., pianist clive Swansbourne will present the third in his series of concerts including all of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas.

The recital will take place in Killinger Auditorium in the Criminal Justice Center at SHSU. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted and will go toward the piano enrichment and scholarship fund.

Sunday's concert will feature the great "Appassionata" sonata, which Beethoven himself considered the best of his sonatas. Also included are the beautiful "Pastorale" sonata and two earlier works.

This will be the third time Swansbourne has traversed the sonata cycle, a project he finds more absorbing and exhilarating than any other. The series is funded by an SHSU Faculty Research Grant. (For more information about Swansbourne and the series, see The Huntsville Item story.)

"I am hoping, in addition to giving pleasure to already established concert-goers, to make some converts and spark a lifelong interest in newcomers to this music," said Swansbourne.

"There is nothing elitist about Beethoven," Swansbourne continued. "His music has a direct and universal appeal, and the elemental power to move and inspire and make life more interesting. He is still considered by many to have been the greatest composer ever, and his popularity continues to increase after nearly two centuries."

The remaining dates in the series are Dec. 8, Jan. 26, Feb. 16, Mar. 9 and Mar. 30, all at 4 p.m. in Killinger Auditorium. For additional information call 936.294.1385.
