SHSU Update for Week of Feb. 14, 1999
That is the situation that confronts Conrad Jerrett (Trey Huguley) in the Sam Houston State University Department of Theatre and Dance production of Judith Guest's "Ordinary People" Wednesday though Saturday (Feb. 17-20).
Cal and Beth Jerrett, Conrad's parents, are played by Peter Jewell and Stacey Hannon. Senior musical theatre major Patrick Pearson is directs the contemporary exploration of suicide, family crisis and the depth of friendship.
Cast members include Danielle Borden, Tamisha Floyd, Jeff Narsh, Corby Sullivan, Maggie Wilhite and Daniel Wright. Senior theatre majors Roberta Lakavage designed sets and Jennifer Brooks-Ashley costumes, with Wendy Lucas serving as stage manager. Larry Routh, SHSU technical director, was the lighting designer.
Performances are at 8 p.m. in the Showcase Theatre, with a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. Tickets are $8 and may be reserved at the University Box Office by calling 409-294-1329.
The purpose of the event was to bring higher education and business chief executive officers together to share views on how Texas' higher education and business communities might work together to ensure a well-prepared citizenry and workplace.
Hutson is president and chief executive officer of First Bank of Houston. A 1965 Sam Houston State graduate, he has been active in support of programs in the SHSU College of Business Administration and was honored in the naming of the Smith-Hutson Endowed Chair of Banking and Smith-Hutson Business Building.
Marks also serves as a member of the board of directors of the Association of Texas Colleges & Universities.
The conference is sponsored by the Sam Houston State University Department of Language, Literacy and Special Populations in collaboration with Education Service Center, Region VI. Registration is under way at the SHSU Teacher Education Center.
Joan Prouty, associate professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the SHSU College of Education and Applied Science, said the conference is for adults working with children three years old through the second and third grades.
Administrators, directors, public and private school teachers, teaching assistants, parents, grandparents, university pre-service teachers, and high school future teacher group members will all benefit, said Prouty.
The sessions will cover math, science, social studies, special needs and English as a Second Language children, along with reading and writing sessions.
Registration is $35, which includes continental breakfast and lunch. A special registration fee for university students and future teacher group members is $25.
"We'll have information students can use in planning their college career, campus tours, and opportunities to meet with professors in two fields of study," said Joey Chandler, director of admissions/recruiting.
"We believe strongly in the benefits of a college education and especially the quality and value of a Sam Houston State University education," said Chandler. "We think 'Saturdays@Sam!' will help any student who might be considering college, at Sam Houston State University or elsewhere, and we encourage them to attend."
Students planning to attend can register for "Saturdays@Sam!" on-line through the SHSU Web page (http://www.shsu.edu/), by calling the Admissions Office at 409-294-1584, or can arrive at Johnson Coliseum by 8:30 a.m. without pre-registering.
