New Degree SoughtA new degree program in Sam Houston State University's College of Business Administration, to take advantage of increasing demands for computer systems specialists, was approved Friday by the university's regents.
The Texas State University System Board of Regents approved the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree with a major in management information systems. If approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the new degree could be offered in the 1999 fall semester.
The action was taken by the regents at a regular quarterly meeting held on the campus of Lamar University in Beaumont. The Texas State University System also includes Angelo State, Southwest Texas State and Sul Ross State.
"The field of information systems is an essential part of business and government organizations," Bobby K. Marks, Sam Houston president, told the regents. "The objectives of the proposed MIS major is to provide the students at Sam Houston State University with the skills necessary to function in entry level information systems positions with a basis for continued career growth."
Demand for management information systems graduates has been high, with opportunities to work in a number of computer and information system positions in industry and government, Marks said.
In other board action concerning SHSU, the addition of air handling equipment associated with heating, ventilation and air conditioning in Belvin-Buchanan and Elliott dorms, was approved, bringing the total for mechanical renovations in the halls to $260,000.
The board also formally accepted gifts to the university totaling $548,384.08.
