Urban Watch, a program for monitoring Texas' environment, will hold a workshop to train volunteers July 18-19 at the physical plant training room in the Sam South complex. The workshop is sponsored by the Texas Regional Institute for Environmental Studies at Sam Houston State University.

Urban Watch trains volunteers to collect samples to aid in detecting polluted runoff waters. The goal is to provide information to state agencies, waste generators and the public so that sound environmental decisions can be made.

Urban Watch and a similar program called Texas Watch are conducted by the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission.

Training is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days with a break for lunch. One complete day is required for certification as a monitor. Kits, chemicals and monitoring packets will be distributed. Volunteers need only to bring a pen for note taking, and may contact Irene Perry at 294-3978 for more information.
