Sam Houston State University was named by the Houston Chronicle on Sunday as one of the top places to work in the greater Houston area in 2010.

The newspaper conducts the survey of Houston-area employers each year. Selections are based upon evaluations and responses by employees.

“It’s a rigorous survey and truly reflects the quality of our campus and the great team of faculty and staff who provide a dynamic environment. When you are here, you can feel it,” said Sam Houston State President Dana Gibson.

“There are literally thousands of world-class companies and institutions in this region, the sixth largest urban market in the United States. For the University to be named among the top 100 reaffirms that Sam Houston is a great name in Texas education.

“At Sam Houston State, students can dream and succeed, supported by a great community of teachers, artists and authors, inventors, researchers, advisers, and staff.”

The research and rankings in Top Workplaces were conducted by Workplace Dynamics, an independent research and consulting company specializing in employee engagement and retention.

The Houston newspaper’s honor is the second such recognition that Sam Houston State University has received this year.

In July, a national newspaper dedicated to coverage of universities, the Chronicle of Higher Education, named Sam Houston State as one of the great colleges in the nation to work for.

Sam Houston State University was one of only two public, four-year universities in Texas that were named. The other was the University of Texas-Austin.

In the higher education study, more than 43,000 people at 275 campuses were surveyed about how their institution ranked in 12 categories to compile the list of the nation’s 97 best universities to work for.

That survey was administered by ModernThink LLC, a human resources consulting firm in Wilmington, Del.
