Twenty-Five Receive Promotions And/Or Tenure

          

Twenty-five Sam Houston State University faculty members were awarded tenure, promotions or both Friday by Sam Houston State University's board of regents.

          

Those receiving both tenure and promotion, and their new rank, include Kimberly Bell, associate professor in English; Marcus Boccaccini, associate professor in psychology and philosophy; Ronald Daigle, associate professor in accounting; Kathryn Daniel, associate professor in music; Karen Douglas, associate professor in sociology and Jacqueline Jensen, associate professor in mathematics and statistics.

          

Also, Mary K. Lake, associate professor in music; Juliana Lilly, associate professor in management and marketing; Christopher Michel, associate professor in music; Karen Miller, associate professor in music; Sheryl Murphy-Manley, associate professor in music and Diana Nabors, associate professor in language, literacy and special populations.

          

Also, David Nelson, associate professor in psychology and philosophy; Barbara Polnick, associate professor in educational leadership and counseling; Todd Primm, associate professor in biological sciences; Marilyn Rice, associate professor in curriculum and instruction; Sergio Ruiz, associate professor in music and Cynthia Simpson, associate professor in language, literacy and special populations.

          

In addition, seven faculty members were promoted to professor. They include Richard Bello, communication studies; Peggy DeMers, music; Mark Leipnik, geography; Sanjay Mehta, management and marketing; Janet Mullings, criminal justice; Scott Plugge, music and Doug Ullrich, agriculture.

          

The changes in status are effective Sept. 1.

Larry Hoover, professor of criminal justice, was interviewed by Houston Channel 11 for a two-part series on the Houston Police Department's Crime Response Unit. Hoover said such blanket enforcement tactics can reduce crime by 20 percent, but there is a danger of overzealous policing infringing on constitutional rights.
