National Jail Leadership Academy Comes To SHSU

The American Jail Association and the Correctional Management Institute of Texas have joined to develop the first National Jail Leadership Command Academy, which will be held next year in the George J. Beto Criminal Justice Center at Sam Houston State University.

The pilot program of the academy will be held March 1-7, 2009. Another academy will take place the following October.

The training academy is designed for mid-management jail personnel who wish to acquire leadership skills that will prepare them for senior management positions in jail administration.

“The academy will offer significant opportunities for corrections professionals in the state of Texas and across the nation to advance their careers,” said Doug Dretke, executive director of the Correctional Management Institute of Texas.

“Moreover, because this endeavor involves collaboration with the American Jail Association and has the support of the National Institute of Corrections, the Criminal Justice Center and Sam Houston State University will have increased national exposure,” he added.

Topics to be covered include leadership skills, human resources, accountability, emerging issues, communication, ethics, collaboration, discipline issues, finance and budgeting, statistics, and change.

Expert corrections practitioners from across the nation and faculty in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University will conduct the classes.

The academy will consist of 30 participants whose hotel rooms, meals, and learning supplies will be provided.

For more information about the academy, contact Dretke at the Correctional Management Institute of Texas, Sam Houston State University, 936.294.1675, or e-mail djdretke@shsu.edu.

SHSU 'In the News'

Larry Hoover, professor of criminal justice, was interviewed by Houston Channel 11 for a two-part series on the Houston Police Department's Crime Response Unit. Hoover said such blanket enforcement tactics can reduce crime by 20 percent, but there is a danger of overzealous policing infringing on constitutional rights.
