John Lane is the Assistant Professor of Percussion at Sam Houston State University. Prior to his appointment at Sam Houston, Mr. Lane served as Interim Professor of Percussion at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY.
As both a composer and performer, Mr. Lane was recently featured at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, OH. His compositions have been performed on the Sonic Explorations concert series and the MUSIC X new music festival at the Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music. Recently one of his compositions was published as part of the Notations 21 book/website. He has been featured as a performer in the Van Cliburn Foundation’s concert series Modern at the Modern at the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art. In 2004, Mr. Lane was a collaborator, composer, and performer in an interdisciplinary multi-media production, Scaling the Walls, at the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, MD. In addition, he has appeared as a soloist and with The Bain Percussion Group at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention.
Mr. Lane is recognized as a recitalist and clinician across the U. S. and abroad. In August 2007 he performed with his new percussion quartet, PULSUS, at the Hokuto International Music Festival and Nagoya University in Japan. He recently traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii as the percussion adjudicator and clinician for the 2006 Rainbow Invitational Marching Festival at the University of Hawaii.
As an educator, arranger, composer, and performer, Mr. Lane continues to be active in the steel band activity. He has directed and arranged for the UNT Steel Band and the University of Wyoming Pan Band.
Mr. Lane recorded for the Klavier and GIA record labels with the North Texas Wind Symphony. He has performed and recorded alongside artists such as Keiko Abe, William Cahn, Christopher Deane, Mark Ford, and Allen Otte. His educational articles have appeared in Windsong, the Wyoming Music Educators Journal, The Bandmaster’s Review, and Percussive Notes. From 2004-2005 John served as the Chapter President for the Wyoming Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society. He is also a former member of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps.
Mr. Lane is working toward a DMA in Percussion Performance from the Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music. He holds an MM in Percussion Performance from the University of North Texas and a BM from Stephen F. Austin State University. His principle teachers have included: James Culley, Rusell Burge, Christopher Deane, Mark Ford, Scott Harris, Allen Otte, Ed Smith, and Ed Soph. He has studied composition with Michael Fiday, Mara Helmuth, and Allen Otte.
Mr. Lane is an artist/clinician for Innovative Percussion, Evans Drumheads, and Pearl/Adams.
